International: The recent protests in Myanmar have put China front and center on the world stage, with everyone waiting to see whether or not the Chinese government will address the human rights issues in that country. Protesters are calling for a boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but is a boycott enough to force China’s hand, or will they continue to allow the atrocities in Myanmar to continue?National: (Matt Wingard) Recently House Democrats attempted to pass a Resolution condemning Turkey for the Armenia genocide more than 80 years ago. Turkey reacted by recalling its ambassador and threatening to cut logistical support to the U.S. in Iraq. A few days later Democratic Congressman Pete Stark accused the White House of sending soldiers “to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President’s amusement.” Have Democrats moved too far to the Left to keep control of Congress in the next election?Statewide: (Mike Riley) Governor Kulongoski recently walked out of a press interview when a KGW reporter tried to ask him about his alleged role in covering up Neil Goldschmidt’s sexual relationship with his fourteen year old babysitter in the mid 1970s. The governor, a lawyer, is facing a potential bar examination over whether or not he knew about the crime and failed to report it. Can the Governor avoid these questions?Local: (Al Young) If passed, Measure 49 would modify the controversial Measure 37, limiting large developments of subdivisions, commercial properties, and industrial projects on lands now reserved for residential, farm and forest uses. Do you really think the public understands what Measure 49 is, and will it pass?
