Sunday, July 1st, 2007Statewide: The Oregon Public Utility Commissioners recently approved immediate electricity rate increases averaging 13 percent for most residential customers. Why do our electricity rates continue to skyrocket when we have a great capacity for hydro-electric production in our own backyard? Should Oregonians finally begin to seriously consider making the private utility companies public power providers?
Local: The departure of Portland Public School Superintendent Vickie Phillips seems to have come as a shock to some board members and the public. Portland Schools are currently undergoing a monumental change in structure, bringing back the idea of housing grades K-8 at a single site. In light of Ms. Phillips’ recent departure, should the school board members who bought into her vision now be questioning its merit?
