Topics
International: Democrats backed off after the House failed, on a vote of 222 to 203, to override the president’s veto of a $124 billion measure that would have required U.S. forces to begin withdrawing from Iraq as early as July. So now what? Will we or won’t we be getting out of Iraq any time soon?National: Immigration reform has stalled in the US Senate, although its backers claim they will bring it back in a couple of weeks. Supporters say their compromise bill is better than the status quo. Is that true?

Statewide: The Oregon Public Utility Commissioners recently approved immediate electricity rate increases averaging 13 percent for most residential customers. Why do our electricity rates continue to skyrocket when we have a great capacity for hydro-electric production in our own backyard? Should Oregonians finally begin to seriously consider making the private utility companies public power providers?

Local: The departure of Portland Public School Superintendent Vickie Phillips seems to have come as a shock to some board members and the public. Portland Schools are currently undergoing a monumental change in structure, bringing back the idea of housing grades K-8 at a single site. In light of Ms. Phillips’ recent departure, should the school board members who bought into her vision now be questioning its merit?
