Topics International: (Pina Bitel) President Bush has just announced that troops will now have to serve 15 months, rather than one year in Iraq. With the current administration tactic of adding more troops to bring security to Baghdad, do the recent lapses in Green Zone security and the increasing levels of violence outside of Baghdad indicate that the troop surge isn’t working?National: (Richard Donin) Dr. Amory Lovins new book, The Oil Endgame, suggests that the US could significantly reduce or replace imported petroleum without causing economic turmoil. One side argues that the US needs to allow more drilling and expand our refinery capacity, while others argue that we just need to lower consumption. How can the US make the quickest head way in reducing our reliance on foreign oil? Will rising gas prices and titanic oil company profits be the mother of invention?
State: (Al Young) Senator Gordon Smith has raised eyebrows and the hackles of some, by publicly standing in opposition to President Bush’s Iraq War policy. A survey of Oregon voters that my firm conducted showed that Senator Smith had bi-partisan approval ratings of 54% with unfavorable ratings of just 25%. Will the Democrats find a credible challenger for the seat and will the Senator face opposition in the Republican primary?
Local: The $117 million Washington County Commuter Rail, from Wilsonville to Beaverton is scheduled to open in 17 months. Does the region’s mish-mash of transit options make sense and will a significant number of riders actually use this Commuter Rail?
Next Christmas, the Washington Square stop will be the hottest property on the West Side.
