Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008This program 75 of the To The Point! series.
International (Richard Donin) National elections were held in Zimbabwe over a month ago, and the election results are still unknown, because President Robert Mugabe refuses to publish them. Mr. Mugabe's allies say that neither candidate passed the threshold of more than 50% of the vote required to be declared the president and so a run-off will be needed. With the main opposition parties joining forces, can the country peacefully usher Mugabe out?
National: (Matt Wingard) Federal incentive checks are in the mail, but will they have the desired effect of stimulating the economy? Will people actually spend the money on consumer goods, or will the extra cash just go for rising food and fuel costs?
State: (Al Young) Oregon State Governor Ted Kulongoski says he will defend Oregon's 10% ethanol mandate even as there are global calls for them to be rolled-back in the face of rising food prices and food shortages. The Governor claims ethanol subsidies are a bridge to non-food based biofuel. Should Oregon's biofuels mandates continue?
Local: (Mike Riley) In Portland, taxpayers have coughed up $30 million in unpaid water bills, due to billing mismanagement, watched as tram costs escalated from 15 to over $60 million, and are being told they need to vote to raise another $400 million to provide basic street maintenance. Is mayoral candidate Sam Adams'plan to spend over $5 million for a questionable bicycle bridge more mismanagement or is this really a priority for the city?
